Loire Valley The remainder of our first week was spent in the Loire Valley an area that was popular among royalty several centuries ago. There are many mansions called chateaus that were built by the rich and famous of the day.
We stayed at this B&B. Some of the rooms were built into the side of the hill. They were exceptionally clean but without telephone or TV. Breakfast was fresh coffee and French breads with cheese, jams and a great ambiance.
We spent the days driving to see the chateaus and the evenings at fine restaurants. The French were invariably friendly and we encountered no attitude problems. There is very little obesity in France even though they major on great food. They smoke in restaurants and bring their dogs in too. Food is expensive even though France is an agricultural nation. Gas is high too and you don't see SUVs or pickup trucks. Lots of motorcycles and scooters.
